3 Steps to Utilize a Kindle Promotion Efficiently

Kindle Promotion Choices

There are two choices when setting up a Kindle Promotion. You can make one of your KDP Select books free for 5 days, OR you can discount the price of a book for up to 7 days. This is a choice made separately for each book; it doesn’t affect them all at once.

You can toggle with the price to fluctuate throughout the 7-day period, but I suggest you keep your book at one price the entire 7 days. By doing this, it makes it easier to cross-promote with other authors, and I’ll explain why below.

1. Create a Spreadsheet

First create a spreadsheet, because you will need it in order to keep track of authors who agree to cross-promote with you. To download an example of my spreadsheet, click here. Make sure to keep track of the days that you agree to share their book as well.

2. Cross-Promote with other Authors (A FREE way to advertise)

  • To do this effectively, you’ll need to join certain Facebook groups. For a list of 6 Facebook groups to get started, scroll to the bottom. The authors that are a part of these groups are specifically there to cross-promote by using a newsletter-swap strategy. An author will post when they’re interested in doing a newsletter swap, and you can post too. You won’t share your subscribers’ emails with them, you’ll simply agree to share each other's book on a specific day.
  • Use the spreadsheet from above to keep track of newsletter-swap dates. If you have 7 authors willing to share your discounted book on the 7 Kindle promotion days, you will reach thousands of new readers. A NY Times Bestseller author, who was relaunching his books, agreed to share mine in his newsletter. That helps me reach 6000+ new readers!
  • By keeping your book at one price for the entire 7 days, you won't have to provide authors with different price/time/date information. One less thing to worry about.
  • You must have a newsletter in order to take part in cross-promoting. If you don’t have subscribers yet, visit my other blog post about InstaFreebie and start gaining subscribers now.

3. Third-Party Advertising

Using third-party advertising is hit and miss. I haven’t had much luck with them, but I will use one if I can find a good deal. I scheduled a promo ad with Fussy Librarian, costing only $15. They came recommended by another author. I’ve paid $75 for other sites and didn’t break even; you can find the post about those here. So I didn’t mind spending $15. I scheduled my promo with FL to take place on the first day of my Kindle Promotion Countdown.

Cross-promoting is an excellent method to promote a Kindle book. Do you also use Facebook groups to gain reviews when you launch a new book?

Hi Bogdan!

I haven't used Facebook to target reviews, but I'd love to know your method of doing so. Are you referring to author swap reviews? I'm always looking for more tips to build reviews.
